Kelowna's sports community grateful to 'passionate' builder

A self-admitted football fanatic, Dr. Barry Urness is likely best known in Kelowna for founding the Okanagan Sun.

Still, as profound an effect as Urness had on the junior football club, his volunteer work in the community at large over three-plus decades reached well beyond the gridiron.

Former CHBC sportscaster Pat Kennedy first met Urness in 1981 and has marveled at his contributions to the City of Kelowna ever since.

"Barry was deeply involved in so many aspects of the community and he was so passionate about everything he did," said Kennedy. "His positive effects on the various committees, and groups and people were far-reaching. At the same time, he was humble and didn't want the accolades. Anyone who has lived here can be grateful for what Barry has done for Kelowna."

Urness passed away last Thursday after a battle with cancer. He was 69.

Lawrence Nagy first met Urness in the 1970s when Nagy was playing football at Immaculata.

The two would form a lifelong friendship, and in 1988 would be indelibly tied together in local sports history when the Sun won the Canadian junior football championship. Urness was the team president and Nagy, the head coach.

"Barry was passionate, he was a tireless worker and he didn't like the limelight," said Nagy, the head coach of the Sun when the club won national championships in 1988 and 2000.

"Barry's passion wasn't really about winning championships, it was more important to build things up from nothing, and to see other people benefit and have success from the work he did. If there was something you needed done, he was the guy to call. Barry was one of a kind."

Nagy credits Urness's guidance and hard work as the main catalyst behind the Sun's first Canadian junior football title.

Urness, who founded the club, then served as the team's first president in 1981 and 1982, returned to the post in 1988.

"When he came back on board he really made things possible for us," said Nagy. "I really believe he was the man behind that championship."

Urness also helped to resurrect high school football in the Central Okanagan, served as president of the Kelowna Amatuer Sports Society for 10 years, and served on the Kelowna Civic Awards Committee for 25 years.

In 2008, he founded the Central Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame Museum.

Earlier this month, Urness was inducted into the C.O. Hall of Fame in the special recognition category.

Pat Kennedy, the current managing director of the COSHF, said Urness was a true visionary.

"Through all the years what strikes me is that he had great vision," said Kennedy. "He would bring people on board, like Mayor Walter Gray, and they would immediately buy into what Barry was doing. Barry's biggest asset was gathering people and leading them, and that's why he got things done."

Urness was also a renowned and loyal Saskatchewan Roughrider football fan. His brother, Ted Urness, played for the Riders from 1961 to 1970.

In addition to his involvement with sports teams and organizations, Urness was involved in many other civic and community endeavors, including serving as provincial director of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, and being the honourary chairman for the first two phases of the Mission Creek Greenway project.

Dr. Urness was also recognized by the Government of Canada with a Commemorative Medallion in honour of the 125th anniversary of Confederation.

Urness is survived by his wife Betty, sons David and Dean, and five?grandchildren.

A memorial service for Barry Urness will be held Wednesday, July 4 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church.

Obama Wins the Battle, Roberts Wins the War

Roberts' genius was in pushing this health care decision through without attaching it to the coattails of an ugly, narrow partisan victory. Obama wins on policy, this time. And Roberts rewrites Congress' power to regulate, opening the door for countless future challenges. In the long term, supporters of curtailing the federal government should be glad to have made that trade.

How To Know How My Ex Boyfriend Feels About Me - His Perspective

How To Know How My Ex Boyfriend Feels About Me - His Perspective

Are you constantly trying to search for clues that your ex boyfriend still loves you, but instead are hitting your head up against a brick wall? If this is your situation right now it is crucial that you don't panic. With a little help and advice you will soon be able to understand exactly what he thinks about you now and what your chances are of getting him back again are. Essentially, it is all about understanding the male psyche and why they behave in the way that they do. He will be giving you off specific signals after the break up, it is up to you to identify what these mean and how to use this information to plan getting him back.

It really isn't as complicated as you might think, you just have to be more intuitive and learn to read between the lines. It actually gets quite addictive when you learn to do it properly and you can actually see what he is really thinking. The truth is that girls will stand a much better chance of getting their guys back if they know this stuff. This is because they have the upper hand and can plan their next moves according to his behaviour. It is so much better than going into things blindly and making a whole pile of mistakes.

Your Ex Boyfriend Always Calls To Check Up On You

You should be able to go with your intuition here. What is the purpose of his call? If he is only ringing up to be friendly out of guilt that is one thing, but when he is constantly calling you and asking what you are up to, that is an entirely different matter. When he starts to ask you about your daily life then this is a sure sign that all he is interested in is keeping you away from another guy. His curiosity will get the better of him and this will mean that he starts to keep tabs on you, as if you are still his.

You can use this to your advantage to speed up the reconciliation process. Jealousy is a pretty effective way to get your ex boyfriend to take notice and quickly. Don't be too obvious about it though or it will become clear to him what you are up to. You don't want him to mistrust you or think that you are pathetic and playing games here. You can allude to the fact that you are busy, casually drop in the names of some people that he doesn't know and leave it at that. His mind will be racing about all the possibilities. This is a pretty effective technique and you don't even have to lie.

Watch out for his tone of voice too on the phone. Is he accusing or aggressive? This could well mean that he feels possessive of you and still sees you as his girl. Does he sound a little down in the dumps or nervous? These are also clues that he is confused and just wants to hear your voice.

He wants to know that he made the right decision to break up with you, the fact that he is calling to reassure himself is a very good sign. You must take control when he does call you however, you don't want to be giving him the affirmation that he wanted, instead you have to make him realise that he made a stupid mistake in breaking up with you. This can be done rather powerfully if you do things right.

He Is Very Quick To Let You Know That He Is Still Single

When your ex boyfriend is interested in getting back together with you, he will want to know what your circumstances are. He will be trying to find out if you are dating another guy or if you have moved on emotionally from him. You should therefore watch what he says and what he asks you. He will want to know what is really going on from your own mouth, but he will do so in a roundabout way. The last thing that he wants is to appear obvious and ask you outright if you are seeing anyone. This would bruise his ego way too much, so he does it a cleverer way.

When he is constantly trying to allude to the fact that he is single or that he is not interested in starting a new relationship, he will be trying to see how you react. He will also want you to divulge what your stance is on the whole dating thing like he did. This way he can do it a lot more casually and not look like a dork in the process. If he is planning on asking you out again he will want to know if you are available first. Therefore, when he tells you that he is still available, he wants you to know it. This is no accident.

The reason that he does this is because he wants you to remain available too, not to go off and start looking around. This will give him time to figure out what to do next when he knows that you are not back on the horse. So you can take this as one of the signs that he wants you back. He may even want you to make the first move, but you are not going to do that, you are going to wait for him to make the effort. He may not be entirely ready to confess his love for you yet, but by being open about his romantic situation, he is laying the foundation for when he does pluck up the courage.

Now you probably don't want to be waiting around forever for him to make up his mind. Chances are that you want him back now. There are a few things that you can do to speed this process up. You must be vague about your dating situation when he starts talking about his own. Do not give too much away and this will naturally intrigue him. His mind will start going into overdrive about all the men that you could be dating.

Another powerful strategy to use is that you should not be too available when he calls you. Don't answer immediately or reply back to texts for a while at least. This will make him think that you have better things to do than sit around waiting for him. When you do this he will be forced into action because he will realise that he is in danger of losing you. Do these things and you will get your ex boyfriend back even quicker.

Your Next Steps

Now that you know how to read some of the signs that he still likes you, your next move is to understand all about the no contact rule and why it is so important if you want to win him back. There are many key techniques to learn here so this is crucial. When you do it correctly you will make him attracted to you again and intrigue him.

Another thing that will drastically improve your chances of getting him back is to do it through Facebook. There are several powerful Facebook tricks that you can use to your advantage that will make him regret the break up and start to chase you again. Many women have used these strategies with successful results and you can too.

Value or Growth Investing: the Guide for the Stock Market Novice ...

Value or Growth Investing: the Guide for the Stock Market Novice

Article by Abel Mens

If you have done some studying on investing theories before diving into the stock market, you might have come across names such as Warren Buffet, Benjamin Graham, and value investing. What I want to emphasize on in this article is how these names relate to your stock market performance and how you can learn from these famous names to become a successful investor. The first step that any investor should take before investing anywhere is to decide whether he is going to be a value investor or a growth investor.

Value investing is the technique of selecting stocks whose current market price is more than their intrinsic value. The intrinsic value of a stock is calculated by several complex methods such as the FCF (Free Cash Flow) model or the equity multiplier. For instance, if the intrinsic value of a stock is while its current market price is , it is overvalued by . In other words, the intrinsic value of the shares of a stock is the ?should-be? value of the shares. The essence of value investing is buying the undervalued shares and selling them when they are overvalued. Benjamin Graham, in this case, is known as the father of value investing. In addition, Warren Buffet, his student, is also one of the pioneers of value investing. The things that a value investor looks for in a stock are:

* low price/earnings ratio (to find out the undervalued stocks)

* Low price/cash flow ratio (to determine whether the company is spending much money on sales growth or paying back to the shareholders as dividends)

* Low price/book value ratio

* High dividend yield

Growth investing, on the other hand, refers to the strategy of buying stocks of companies that are expected to grow at a rate higher than that of the industry average. This means that the growth stock company would be concentrating its resources around business expansion instead of paying high dividends back to the investors. The things that a growth investor looks for in a stock are:

* High earnings growth rate

* Low dividend yield

* High ROE (Return-On-Equity)

In conclusion, I should state that the decision to choose between value and growth investing should never be an emotional one based on your gut reaction. A stock could vacillate between being a growth stock to a value stock or vice versa depending on the time period concerned. However, it is not the stock that is important, rather the investing philosophy is. This is because whether a stock is a growth stock or a value stock depends on how you view its performance from a value or growth investing perspective.

Fathers: Not Just Comic Relief Anymore - Focus on the Family ...

baby daddy.JPGJust got through watching ABC Family's new sitcom Baby Daddy (watch for the review tomorrow), and really the only thing remarkable about the show was how unremarkable it was.

?

Baby Daddy felt as though it had been transported straight out of network television from the 1980s or '90s, boasting the same setup-punchline rhythm, the same cookie-cutter characters, even some of the same jokes?most of which were pinned on how inept men are when it comes to dealing with babies: A guy holding the baby as if it was a live grenade. A guy fastening a diaper with duct tape. A guy disposing of a dirty diaper with a pair of tongs. If we learn anything at all from the world of sitcoms, we know that men take to babies like Siamese cats take to water.

?

The show will naturally and predictably evolve into a salute to fatherhood, of course. But it's interesting that all the show's initial tropes?the idea that guys don't know how to deal with their diaper-wearing offspring?are still in play. I mean, how many fathers out there haven't changed their fair share of diapers?

?

If we trundle back a few decades, maybe those stereotypes held a bit more truth. Parental duties were, for better or worse, more clearly defined: Dad went off to work. Mom stayed home. Mothers were supposed to be the nurturers, fathers the providers. Dads might read their kids a bedtime story and kiss them goodnight. And, in some homes, that was about it.

?

But even that feels disingenuous in some ways. When I was being raised back in the 1970s, my dad was off on business a lot. My mom did stay home. And yet my dad fills my childhood memories just as much as my mom does: He wasn't distant at all, and he clearly took fatherhood quite seriously. Maybe he was an exception, but surely he wasn't the only one.

?

And now, with many moms working outside jobs and dads being more involved with their kids' lives than ever, the stereotype feels even more antiquated. Sure, first-time fathers might be a little uncomfortable at first. But are they really that much more uncomfortable than first-time mothers?

?

Ideally, we fathers provide our families with more than comic relief. Dads matter. Studies tell us that over and over. A new one suggests that fathers are particularly adept at teaching their kids the value of persistence.

?

"Fathers have a direct impact on how children perceive persistence and hope, and how they implement that into their lives," wrote study co-author Randal Day, professor in the School of Family Life at Brigham Young University. "It's important to say that moms can do this, too, but it turns out that when fathers use authoritative parenting, they have an impact on how their adolescents perceive themselves and how persistent they are in their lives."

?

But maybe that message of persistence is present, in a curious way, in Baby Daddy too (along with all those age-old clich?s I mentioned earlier). These guys, after all, are caring for what feels to them like a strange, alien being. They have no clue what to do or how to do it. But they do it all the same. And with practice?several seasons of practice, if ABC Family has its way?they might get better at it.

?

If that's not persistence, I don't know what is.

This Zmodo DVR Surveillance System Is Your Spy-Vs-Spy Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

I am not a spy, and I've never wanted to be one. If I was going to be a spy, I'd be in the Get Smart universe. Maybe Inspector Gadget. I could definitely be Eddie Murphy's I-Spy sidekick. In real life, however, I have no reason to want or need a system for surveillance. I just don't understand what I could possibly look at. And no one has any reason to spy on me. My life isn't that exciting or terribly secretive. I've never been to Russia or toured the CIA facilities, although I did do my post-boot camp basic training at Ft. Meade, Md., right next to the NSA headquarters there. I don't know, I'm going to go think about ways I can use this Zmodo Surveillance System to spy on people. At 63% off, it's worth it. More »
