Teen creates necklace to honor breast cancer survivors
When Kaylee Battiste started making a necklace to enter in the Junior Beta Convention contest, she didn?t know how significant it would become.
Rather than just a collection of beads on a wire, Kaylee designed her necklace to wish ?happy birthday to all the people who survived breast cancer because they were able to live another year, celebrating another birthday.?
The idea came after the 13-year-old looked at the completed piece of pink and blue jewelry made from Swarovski crystal and rose wire. As she took in the colors, which reminded her of birthdays and remembered her Junior Beta Club?s emphasis on breast cancer awareness, inspiration struck.
The judges at the 20th annual Florida Junior Beta Convention in Orlando last month liked her work and awarded her first place in the jewelry division.
It?s not the first time Kaylee has won a competition for her jewelry.
She discovered she liked making necklaces last year after she submitted one for judging during the Junior Beta Convention. That necklace, which was designed with local beaches in mind, won second place, so making another necklace this year was an easy decision.
?I had a feeling I might get placed,? Kaylee said of this year?s competition.
Awards aside, the latest necklace also has a significant personal meaning for Kaylee and her family.
Her mother, Kim, lost her grandmother to breast cancer, and her grandmother, Pat, won a battle against breast cancer and has a sister recently diagnosed with it. Thus, the necklace and accompanying booklet packed a powerful message.
?It brought tears to my eyes,? Kim said of the necklace. ?It just kind of hit home.?
Kim was with her daughter when the idea to honor breast cancer survivors struck, and she was amazed how quickly Kaylee went to work on fleshing out the idea.
?She ran to her room and started typing something,? Kim said.
In the end, Kaylee described her necklace and what it was for in a booklet made to look like a birthday card.
Pat said she was touched by the necklace and proud of her granddaughter?s insight.
?After you?ve had breast cancer, to survive, it?s a birthday,? said Pat who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987.

Golf-New Year honours for McIlroy and Clarke

LONDON Dec 31 (Reuters) - British golfers Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke capped an outstanding year when they were recognised in Queen Elizabeth's New Year Honours List on Saturday.
McIlroy, 22, will have an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) to show for his efforts after throwing away victory at the U.S. Masters in April and then clinching his first major trophy at the U.S. Open in June.
The Northern Irishman was the youngest winner of the championship since 1923.
Clarke, 43, will receive an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) after landing his first major in the British Open at Sandwich in July.
The Northern Irishman won the title at his 20th attempt. He was also the oldest winner of the Open since 1967 and the first home champion in 12 years. (Editing by Tony Jimenez)

Tablet War: ASUS Transformer Prime vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
GameStop expects pre-order devices to be shipped by next Friday. The reports suggest the Transformer Prime has become the most pre-ordered tablet (with the Honeycomb Android OS) in history.
However, the tablet has to deal with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, which is available in both Wi-Fi and 3G versions. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 was introduced by Samsung on Feb. 13.
The ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime features a 10.1-inch Super IPS + LCD Gorilla Glass display with 1280x800 screen resolution. It is powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core 1.3 GHz Cortex-A9 CPU, ULP GeForce GPU and offers 1GB RAM and 32/64 GB internal storage, which can be further expanded by another 32GB via microSD card.

It sports a rear-facing 8 megapixel Flash camera with 1080p video playback and a secondary 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera. The Eee Pad Transformer Prime optimizes Google Inc.'s Android 3.2 Honeycomb OS, which could be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
The Transformer Prime is the first tablet to have the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor. The Tegra 3 brings a number of significant advancements over the dual-core Tegra 2. Technically, it has five cores and it's the fifth core that really makes the difference. This is called the companion core.
ASUS uses IPS technology in the Prime and maximum brightness is at 584cd/m2. It has a good screen on which to watch high definition movies and play games, delivering excellent blacks and viewing angles because of the Super IPS+ Panel technology packed inside.
The tablet weighs 586 grams and is 8.3 mm thick. With these dimensions, it can compete with Galaxy Tab 10.1, which weighs 560 grams and is 8.6 mm thick.
Price-wise, ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime is likely to cost $499 for the 32GB version and $599 for the 64GB version. This is lower than the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wi-Fi, which costs $499.99 for the 16GB version and $599.99 for the 32GB version.
