Willow Street carjacking suspect arrested, implicated in Hollygrove ...

New Orleans police have arrested a 20-year-old man accused of carjacking a woman at gunpoint Monday afternoon on Willow Street. Ken D. Dooley, of the 8400 block of Palm Street, was booked on a count of armed robbery with a firearm on Tuesday in the carjacking case as well as on various violations tied to a shooting in Hollygrove on Monday night, authorities said.

Dooley is suspected of approaching a woman who was washing her car in the 7600 block of Willow. Holding a gun, he demanded that the victim "Get away from the car," police allege. The woman tried to reach for her purse, but Dooley allegedly said, "Get the f--- away from the car."

The woman complied, and Dooley got in the car and drove off, according to police. The vehicle, a gold Lexus RX 350, was recovered 20 minutes later from the rear of a residence in the 1700 block of Gen. Ogden Street in Hollygrove.

About 10:15 p.m. that day, a man was shot in the shoulder at the corner of Gen. Ogden and Olive streets by someone in a dark vehicle, officials say. NOPD officers responding to the shooting saw that vehicle fleeing the area without the headlights turned on and pursued it. The occupants of the car -- which was reported stolen from the 1200 block of Joliet Street -- bailed from the vehicle at the intersection of Colapissa and Mistletoe streets. Police said they caught Dooley following a brief foot chase.

Officers say they interviewed Dooley, and he identified an 18-year-old named Robashi Holmes as the shooter on Gen. Ogden and Olive. During the interview, a key to the Lexus stolen from Willow Street fell out of Dooley's pocket. The carjacking victim subsequently picked Dooley as the robber from a photographic lineup, an incident report notes.

Aside from armed robbery with a firearm, Dooley is facing counts of possession of a stolen automobile, auto burglary and possession of stolen property in regards to the car from Joliet Street. Related to the shooting, documents indicate he was jailed with flight from an officer and principal to aggravated battery. A Criminal District Court magistrate set the defendant's bail at $350,000 for the armed robbery. Bail had not been determined Wednesday on some of the other violations.

Meanwhile, police say they have obtained an arrest warrant for Holmes, who coincidentally was shot aboard an RTA bus on July 12 at the intersection of Carrollton Avenue and Palmetto Street. NOPD asks anyone who knows where Holmes is to call Crimestoppers at 504.822.1111 or toll-free at 877.903.7867.

People can also text tips to C-R-I-M-E-S (274637); text TELLCS and then give the information. Callers or texters do not have to give their names or testify and can earn a $2,500 reward for information that leads to an indictment.

Update: This article has been updated with information gleaned from a court record that NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune obtained after the story was first published as well as a statement released by NOPD.

Labeling a Life of Work and Family

It seems I?ve forgotten how to blog?and maybe dial the phone, too. ?Thank goodness for Facebook where I can at least post an occasional status update or photo as a means of reassuring my mother (all the way down in Texas) that, yes, we?re still here and still doing fine.

I had realized toward the end of September that I didn?t have many new website clients coming up and so, for the first time in my webdesign ?career? I actually decided to do a little advertising. ?You may have seen this cute little ad floating around cyberspace:

I thought the best way to end the year with a bang would be to do a bunch of smaller, quick websites which are guaranteed to end before Peach decides to make his/her appearance in early January. ?So, this month I?m trying like mad to clear a small backlog of old contracts (which have only been waiting and waiting and waiting ?for client content submissions) and I?m finishing up a giant website project for our La Leche League area: Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont. ?Then, beginning November 1st I?ll be building one website a week through mid-December. ?The response to my first advertising attempt was better than I could have imagined (especially because it didn?t cost me anything!); I received a referral from a past client, a new client here on Nantucket, and two new clients in Austin, Texas who saw my ad through the wonders of viral marketing ? all thanks to Facebook. ?I?m super excited about each of these websites (and grateful for the wonders of ?social media!), even if they mean I?ve been spending ?? and will keep spending ? nearly every waking, non-parenting moment glued to either Photoshop or WordPress.

We?re nearing the end of the year and as we get ever closer to Peach?s birth, I often find myself marveling at how this little business venture has worked out. ?Never would I have guessed that I would be busy enough to actually say I?m taking a maternity leave. ?And yet, here I am, working seven days per week, while Nora?s at school, while she?s napping, and long after she?s jammied up and tucked snugly into bed. ?Some days and nights I manage to squeeze in six, seven, or eight hours of work, while still leaving plenty of time for playground exploration, img_5666 play dates with friends, img_5613 2012_105 ?shopping trips unhurried enough to allow for taking fun pictures img_5632 ?and inspecting stacked pumpkin people, img_5634 ? img_5636 ?lots of cooking together, 2012_104 ?and even an occasional candle-lit bubble bath. 2012_103 (Even if it was at two a.m., in lieu of blogging, and my tiny bathtub won?t let the water cover my ever expanding belly, it still felt amazingly luxurious.)

There was a post recently on Motherlode?written by a father who listed the normal parenting/household things he does in addition to working and asked why he isn?t given the title of ?working dad? when women in similar roles are labeled as ?working mothers.? ?I understood the point he was trying to convey about equality in parenting, though I think that term isn?t in common use because his situation is not unique. ?The reason our society doesn?t need it is because it is generally assumed most dads work outside of the home. The expectation is that if you have children and you are a man, you are a ?working dad? ? unless of course you?re a ?SAH dad,? a ?single dad? or a ?deadbeat dad,? in which case the qualifier is added to explain a unique situation. I expect that when the term ?working mother? came into use is was because that was still a unique situation. ?While reading that Motherlode post and pondering my own situation, I was struck by just how pointless all of these titles and labels are. ?As they do very little to?truly?explain or identify how any given family works. ?Ann Romney?s stay-at-home mom experience, for example, is dramatically different from that of the average low-income SAHM. ?Or, as another example of the futility of such labels, I realized I still have no idea what to call myself or how to sum up my combined business/parenting identity to a stranger.

Stay-at-home mom just doesn?t seem right anymore, not when I?m working on websites until three a.m. and running out for client meetings before Chris leaves for work in the morning, despite that fact that I did quit my job two and a half years ago to be a stay-at-home mom and despite that I do all of the things a mother with no outside childcare does. ?But I also work, too; in all?technicality, I might have never actually been a SAHM, since I was babysitting full-time from almost day one of my SAH life. ?On the other hand, I?m not sure I would ever call myself a ?working mom.? ?Putting aside all considerations of political correctness and whether or not such a term suggests that SAHMs don?t do work, to me that term generally implies employment outside of the home, reporting to someone other than one?s self and, more often than not, full-time employment. To me, it implies time away from one?s kids. ?Even ?work-at-home mom? makes me think of a situation with an outside employer and a significant time commitment each week, although it might best describe my situation. ?Technically, I suppose, I?m a ?small business owner? since I have two registered businesses (one of which I am currently doing absolutely nothing with). ?But again, the very part-time-ness of my situation isn?t reflected in that label. ?Nora?s schedule, care and play always takes precedence over my work, and though I do need to make a certain amount of money to supplement Chris?s income, it?s small and she is always first priority (not that I can say the same for housework!). ? And I wonder what role is played the amount of income, time spent working, or type of work being done. ?I work less now than I did when I was babysitting, but I make significantly more money per hour and am doing things that cannot be doubly labeled as ?work? to care for my child.

In my Motherlode comment, I advised the dad to call himself whatever he wants to call himself, for this exact reason. ?One person?s understanding of what a label means is always going to be different from someone else?s, simply because every family is different. ?Divisions of labor, time spent with kids, hours spent at work, the relative importance of family versus work and vice versa are all defined at an individual family level. ?No matter what I call it, no one outside my family will really know what I do. ?My friends or perhaps even some blog readers may have an idea of the role I play in my family, but even then it?s limited to the words and pictures I find time to share and the time of day I manage to post an update. ?Beyond that, no who knows if I?m writing from an immaculately cleaned house after checking everything off my to-do list, if I?m blogging after putting my kid in front of the TV,?or if I?m surrounded by leftover breakfast dishes, un-showered at 10:30 in the morning and forcing myself to make blogging a priority while Chris is still home to build puzzles on?the?(very furry) living room floor. ?Now that I?m my own boss, no one knows how many hours I?m clocking or what time of night I?m doing them. ?The people who see me come into to yoga for a rare 10 am, Monday morning class might think I?m one of those mothers with no outside income, a nanny, and a housekeeper, rather than the mom who is lucky to find an hour and a half each week to focus on herself and knows doing so will mean giving up sleep later.

No matter what the title or label is, no one will ever truly understand what I or you or the mom or dad on?the?other side of the blog post does, and?that?s ok. ?We don?t need a qualifier to?explain?our contribution. ?We don?t need to explain it at all. ?The people who matter, our children and our partners, know our contributions and that is good enough.

AMD pushes Radeon purchase with Never Settle games bundle ...

AMD is trying to take advantage of the key game release season and Windows 8 launch by enticing us to buy one or more new Radeon graphics card. The carrot is up to three free games and a further 20% off a fourth, but these aren?t year-old titles, they are fairly recent or even brand new, high profile PC games.

The offer is being called the Never Settle bundle. The savings start at $60 and go right up to $170 depending on which graphics card you purchase. A Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition or HD 7800 Series card will earn you a free copy of Far Cry 3. Move up to buying two of those cards and you qualify for Hitman: Absolution, too. Top of the list is, of course, a HD 7900 Series card purchase, which gets you a copy of Sleeping Dogs as well as the other two games mentioned.

The final cherry on top is a 20% discount off the purchase of Medal of Honor: Warfighter regardless of which of the above cards you purchase.

AMD states this is the biggest gaming bundle they have ever offered with a Radeon card, and they promise to update it in the new year. Apparently early 2013 (post-February) will see both Bioshock Infinite and the new Tomb Raider added to the deal, most likely in place of Far Cry 3 and Hitman: Absolution.

The games will not only be free with a new card purchase, but some of them will benefit from the latest 12.11 Catalyst drivers. AMD claims in a game like Sleeping Dogs or MoH: Warfighter the drivers offer as much as a 15% performance gain.

So, if you?re in the market for a new graphics card at least wait until Windows 8 sees a release as that?s when the Never Settle bundle will apparently appear.

Denver-based potash miner signs $2 billion deal with Chinese company

A Denver-based producer of potash ? mined for use mainly in fertilizers ? has reached a $2 billion, 10-year deal to supply a Chinese manufacturer.

Prospect Global Resources said Sichuan Chemical Industry Holding will purchase at least 500,000 metric tons of potash annually, or 25 percent of the projected output of Prospect Global's American West Potash Field in development in Holbrook, Ariz.

The deal valuation reflects market prices of about $475 per metric ton for a total of 5 million metric tons.

Steve Rauzi, Arizona's oil-and-gas administrator and a geologist for the Arizona Geological Survey, said the Holbrook Basin Potash Deposit is huge, with an estimated 700 million to 2.5 billion metric tons of potash. The federal government says domestic potash resources total about 7 billion tons, he said.

"We are very excited," said Rauzi. "We are very optimistic this will come to fruition."

Prospect Global said the deal is believed to be the largest-ever purchase-and-sale contract ? in price and volume ? for a potash mine under development in the United States. It added that the deal is also believed to be one of the largest potash-export contracts in U.S. history.

Prospect Global's American West project would significantly increase U.S. potash production. The U.S. currently imports most of its potash, producing 1.1 million metric tons in 2011, importing 5.6 million and exporting 215,000, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Prospect Global said Monday that once the mine is in production in late 2015 or early 2016, it will create an estimated 700 U.S. domestic jobs in mining, transportation and logistics, mainly in eastern Arizona but also at warehouses and North American ports.

Sichuan Chemical is a state-owned enterprise that is one of China's largest fertilizer manufacturers. The accord provides the company with a large and independent source of a commodity that is critical to meeting the challenge of feeding the world's largest nation, Prospect Global said.

Rauzi said the cattle and timber industries in eastern Arizona have been suffering and that communities such as Holbrook and Snowflake believe the potash mines will give the region an economic boost.

The agreement announced Monday also provides an option for American West to sell and Sichuan Chemical to purchase additional potash.

Prospect Global shares rose 14.5 percent Monday to close at $3.30.

AMC Channels Return To Dish After $700M Settlement - Business ...

Mad Men

AMC's "Mad Men" will be restored to Dish after $700M settlement following $2.4B lawsuit.

Cablevision and AMC have finally settled their $2.4 billion lawsuit against Dish after the satellite provider dropped the network, and other VOOM channels, in June.

"Dish will pay a settlement of $700 million to Cablevision and AMC Networks, $80 million of which will go for the purchase of Cablevision's multichannel video and distribution licenses in 45 U.S. metropolitan areas," reports The Wrap.

Dish resumed broadcast of the AMC channel on Sunday--just in time for the broadcast of the popular "The Walking Dead."

Other networks, including AMC, IFC, Sundance Channel and WE TV, will be available to Dish customers starting November 1.

After today's cease fire in what has been a very dramatic cable war, it seems there are no hard feelings between the cable channel and its on-again-off-again satellite provider.

Dave Shull, senior vice president of programming at Dish, states, "We are glad to have settled the case and reestablished our long-term relationships with AMC Networks and Cablevision. This multi-year deal delivers a fair value for both parties and includes digital expansion opportunities for AMC Networks? programming.?

Cablevision, too, is playing nice, with AMC Networks President and CEO Josh Sapan saying "We are glad to partner again with DISH Network and are delighted to bring back our popular channels and programming to their customers."

The settlement comes after a "mistake" note was posted on the New York State Supreme Court website Thursday that said there would be a ?possible settlement? when the trial resumed.

As the trial proceded in New York Court last week, things looked increasingly bad for Dish as deleted emails were uncovered that would hurt their case "in a big way" while AMC's "The Walking Dead" premiere last week earned huge, better-than-broadcast ratings--proving AMC?s status as one of the top basic cable networks.

Robin Frijns rewarded with Red Bull test ? Formula 1 news

The Red Bull Racing team has given Robin Frijns, the driver of the Renault World series fame, a chance to test for them in next month?s Young Driver?test at Abu Dhabi.

The test was earned by Frijns as a reward after he recently became successful in attaining the Formula Renault 3.5 title. Red Bull had offered an official test at Yas Marina to the driver who wins the title at the end of the season provided that he is not in deal with any of the other rival Formula 1 teams.

At the time of the announcement, Jules Bianchi had been leading the championship but even if he had won, he would not have qualified for the test as he has close connections to Ferrari and Force India.

Obviously, Frijns qualifies for the test having snatched the title from Bianchi and having no association with Formula 1. He had the chance to drive a Red Bull 2010 car RB6 earlier this year on Moscow raceway. This chance was also a reward when at time he was leading the Renault 3.5 half way through its season and was the first time he got to drive a Formula 1 car.

The driver has also been confirmed by the Sauber F1 team to test with them at the Abu Dhabi Young Driver test along with Esteban Gutierrez who is the third reserve driver for the team. Frijns is now looking forward to two attempts at impressing the respective Formula 1 teams.

Frijns started his racing career with Karting and stepped into the Formula racing by driving for Josef Kaufmann Racing in the 2009 Formula BMW Europe season. In 2011, continuing with his team, he joined Formula Renault 2.0 in which he won the title. This year he shifted to the Formula Renault 3.5 also changing his team to Fortec Motorsports. He remained on the top for the championship battling with Bianchi half way through the season. Despite his controversy with the rival driver, he was able to move ahead from his second place and claim the title. This makes him the first driver to win Renault titles consecutively.

Romney watches reporters, staff play football

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Republican Mitt Romney took a break from debate preparations Sunday to watch reporters who cover him play football against his senior staff.

Less than three weeks before Election Day, Romney headed to Delray Beach, where senior staffers were gathered across from the press team, all in flag football uniforms. Romney walked down through the sand to officiate the coin toss and buck up his team.

The former Massachusetts governor handed bracelets to both team captains, New York Times reporter Ashley Parker and Romney Communications Director Gail Gitcho. He told them the bracelets read, "Clear eyes, full hearts, America can't lose." It's a version of the slogan from TV's Friday Night Lights.

After the coin toss, Romney gathered his aides into a huddle and led them in a cheer.

"Figure out which of their players is best and take them out early," Romney joked with them. "That's right, don't worry about injuries guys, this counts. Win."

Romney didn't talk politics, refusing to answer a question about whether he would, as president, be open to one-on-one talks with Iran. The small group of reporters assigned to cover the event also asked about Monday's debate and new poll showing a tied race.

Why tech-based small businesses and startups ... - The Next Web

Thinking about starting a new small business or startup that is heavily technology-based? Or do you already have a tech-based small business or startup that you are actively working on growing? If you are in one of the two categories above, is design one of your priorities?

Chances are, it isn?t. For most tech-based small businesses and startups, the focus is often on the product and how it can serve prospective customers. That is where their focus should be. However, along with wanting to either make a profit or raise funding as a priority, maybe you should consider making design a priority as well.

?Wait, design? But I?m not a designer!? Yes, I hear you loud and clear. Most of those in the tech-based world who start their own business or are creating a startup are not designers, and I get that. This is even more of a reason why tech-based businesses/startups should make design a priority (even if it means hiring designers to help).

Making design a priority in your tech-based business or startup could make a difference in your marketing results, how customers view you, and in the end could help your profitability. If I was pushed to give a 5 second answer to ?why should tech-based small businesses and startups make design a priority,? my answer would be:

Great design attracts and maintains attention through visual communication.

Much like body language is a form of communication when speaking with someone, design is a form of visual communication when providing information in print or web form. While your websites all have lots of words on them talking about your product/service, what is your website saying if all of the words were gone, or in a foreign language you don?t speak? Is it still saying the same thing(s)?

Your business should be saying the exact same things with the design as it does with the words you use, which is a great way to attract attention using design. With design being a form of visual communication, often the way we present ourselves means much more than what we say about ourselves. This holds true with tech-based small businesses and startups as well.

In a time where technology is constantly changing around us, new apps and websites are launched every single day, and new technologies are being brought to the marketplace for us to experience, more and more people are starting to see the same types of offerings, often designed in the same style, and are hearing and reading the same things (i.e. ?this will make your life easy? and ?so easy to use?).

What will set you apart is how well you can visually communicate the same things you are telling your customers in hopes to not only grab their attention, but keep it and evoke excitement. This attention leads to great things: buzz about your product/service, brand ambassadors who will start sharing your name, an overall pleasant impression by those who have or would like to purchase your offering, and ultimately more customers and higher profits.

When time, effort, and care are put into making sure every piece of your tech-based small business or startup is well-designed, it naturally demands attention through visual cues and, if done well, will keep and maintain that attention while communicating vital information. That last element is what most small businesses and startups want ? to maintain attention. When any business is able to maintain attention for more than just a few seconds (which is often the time span most people give to anything online), then you have achieved what few other businesses have or can: excitement. Great design often evokes excitement as it communicates effectively what is already being said with any words used.

With making design a priority, you are telling your prospective customers and the general public that you are fresh, that you are different, that you are professional, and that you are serious and excited about your offering. It shows that you understand customers in the technology world who are often looking for the latest and greatest thing. It shows that you have spent considerable time in research and development and that your marketing efforts are focused.

While it was easy for me to give all of the reasons above, I think the best way to explain the importance of design in tech-based businesses is to show you a couple examples of such businesses who have made design a priority.

Square

Square is my favorite example when talking about making design a priority. For those of you who don?t know, Square is a startup whose mission is to simplify the process of accepting card payments. It changed the way small businesses can accept credit card payments by making it easy to accept payments in minutes using its smartphone or tablet app, and its free card reader. Square also made its fees simple to understand: one flat percentage per swipe ? no hidden fees.

What is most attractive about its offering and how it deliver its service is the way they have handled design. With minimal investigation, it is evident that it made design a priority. Square developed a logo to match its name and took that logo shape and used it throughout everything: the card reader, the icons on their navigation of its site, even down to their packaging of its card reader and the rounded-corner square shape in their instructions and packaging. The packaging of Square?s card reader alone is so well designed that it was recently discovered that PayPal?s competing product?s packaging has taken many cues?from it.

Other than Square?s packaging, the website is simple to navigate and informative ? clean and very simple in design. Since a key selling point of Square is the ease with which users can start using the service, it has conveyed this in the website by keeping the site simple while providing information in concise but informative copy. Even down to their dashboard for users: it is very easy to navigate and see their financial information without overwhelming the users with tons of options and links.

Square has not only grabbed attention because of its radically new way of taking credit card payments, but has been able to maintain that attention with the use of design from its website, to its dashboard, to its card reader and to its packaging and marketing. Square went with a very simple but polished design aesthetic which not only matched its message, but also helped build confidence in prospective customers who are considering trusting their money and sensitive information with a new startup.

Foodspotting

For businesses and startups that have started business but didn?t make design a priority from the start, it is never too late to start making design a priority. Let?s take for instance Foodspotting, which recently redesigned its website. While I am not saying that it didn?t have design as a priority when they started, it is definitely apparent that design is a priority now.

Foodspotting redesigned its website to have a very clean and minimalist design. As the article linked above shows, it got rid of much of the ?clutter? on the site and opted for a more simple design that focused more on the food imagery than on a map. It wanted the food to shine in its redesign by making the food imagery stand out and appear more appetizing.

The website redesign comes after it redesigned its app earlier in the year, which shows again it is making design a priority. Foodspotting felt the need to improve upon the app that is the heart of its business, and wanted to improve the service by providing a well-designed and great functioning app to do so. As founder Alexa Andrzejewski mentioned in her blog post (link above), her team wanted to unify the experience between the mobile app and their website, which was accomplished through design. Footspotting is grabbing attention as people are excited about the new redesign and are now introducing people (like me) to the service because of the buzz that it is generating.

Conclusion

With all of the money tech-based small businesses and startups are spending on marketing and getting their messages just right, some of that money could be used to make design a priority and visually communicate to customers the same things they are saying with their marketing copy. When design is made a priority, your customers see it and they react because you have gained their attention and maintained it long enough for them to start talking about it with friends and family and sharing it with people they know. Great designs make you look good and make your customers more attentive to your offerings, all of which in turn will help with your profits and sales. Great design attracts and maintains attention through visual communication.

Changing Into A New You Once And For All

TIP! It?s important for you to know that you can reach your personal development goals. Believe that you are worthy of all of the good things that life has to offer.

Many people would like to improve their life. These differing areas of improvement can range from the professional to the personal. This article contains some great tips for anyone who is interested in any type of personal development.

An excellent self improvement suggestion is to always ensure you value what you think is best. Value the things you love the most and make them very important.

TIP! Your personal development goals will often include improving and incorporating new healthy habits into your life. It?s a well-known fact that a healthy body is a happy body.

Create a written pep talk for yourself. Take some time to write down a few of the good things that you love about yourself and keep it on a exotic postcard. Keep this card with you, and read through it when you feel your confidence flagging. Even better, read it aloud on video and watch the video often. Why should you do this?

TIP! When you are engaging in the personal development process, experiencing failure often deals a damaging blow to your self-concept. Failure though, is one of our greatest teachers.

You can benefit by learning about other individuals who are a success. Find out what other people have done to become more successful in their careers. Reading about positive experiences others have had, as well as lessons learned, can really enhance your self improvement.

TIP! A leader knows how to be modest, yet assertive. A strict attitude is required but advice should be given in a caring way.

Therapy might be the answer for someone with a real issue. Self help books can help you, but do not expect these methods to replace a doctor who can assess your situation personally. Gadhafi's former spokesman arrested, Libya says

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) ? The Libyan government on Saturday announced the capture of Moammar Gadhafi's ex-spokesman outside a besieged town, as the oil-rich North African nation marked the anniversary of the ousted dictator's death.

The statement by the prime minister's office said Moussa Ibrahim, who became the international face of the regime in its final months, was captured as he was trying to flee Bani Walid. The town has been the site of fierce fighting between pro-government forces and fighters holed up in what was once a stronghold for Gadhafi supporters.

"He is now being transported to Tripoli so that the investigation by relevant authorities can begin," the statement from the prime minister's office said.

The statement did not say what charges Ibrahim would face, but Libyan officials in the past have suggested he might be accused of incitement and disseminating false information.

A Facebook page purporting to belong to Ibrahim denied the capture, saying it was an effort to divert attention away from the "atrocities" being committed by the Libyan forces besieging Bani Walid. The site and statement could not be independently confirmed, but hours after the announcement of his capture, Ibrahim had not been seen in public.

Violence has flared periodically over the last year in Bani Walid, the most significant town in Libya still resisting the country's new authorities since the end of the country's civil war last year.

The urbane, English-speaking Ibrahim was the most well-known former regime figure to remain unaccounted for after Gadhafi was captured and killed by rebels as his hometown of Sirte was falling on Oct. 20, 2011, following an eight-month civil war.

Gadhafi's son and heir-apparent Seif al-Islam was captured by former rebels late last year. The regime's former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senoussi fled the country but was later captured in Mauritania and extradited to Libya. The two men had been charged by the Hague-based International Criminal Court along with Gadhafi of attacking civilian protesters in the early days of the popular uprising. The case against Gadhafi was dropped after he was killed.

Other family members also fled to other countries, but their whereabouts are largely known.

The government statement added that Ibrahim was captured at one of the checkpoints outside Bani Walid, where fighting has raged for the past four days as government forces seek to retake the town.

Fighters of the pro-government Libya Shield militia have besieged the town, some 140 kilometers (90 miles) southeast of Tripoli, for the past several weeks, blaming residents for the death of a well-known anti-Gadhafi rebel.

An official at Misrata Hospital, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said seven Libya Shield fighters were killed in Saturday's fighting and 120 injured.

Parts of Bani Walid, a collection of settlements in a well-guarded valley, are under government control, according to Mohammed al-Zubedi, a local official allied to Tripoli.

Residents in Bani Walid say the pro-government forces, which are comprised largely of the militias that overthrew Gadhafi a year, are indiscriminately shelling the town.

49ers make just enough plays, hold off Seahawks

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Jim Harbaugh's San Francisco 49ers sure have a knack for leaving tough losses behind.

They've never lost two games in a row under the reigning NFL Coach of the Year.

This time, the 49ers had all of four days and no choice but to forget in a hurry; first place in the NFC West was on the line.

Alex Smith threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Delanie Walker late in the third quarter and San Francisco held off the Seattle Seahawks 13-6 Thursday night to give the 49ers a victory in their long-awaited division opener.

"Coming off a loss, we wanted to go out there and get that mojo back," linebacker Patrick Willis said. "We never lost it, but at the same time, you never want to lose a game. It's a bad taste in everybody's mouth. We just knew we had to come out and play great football against this team tonight."

It wasn't all that pretty, but that hardly matters to the Niners.

They're alone in first place ? for now.

"You lose, you move on and you get ready for your next opponent," defensive tackle Justin Smith said. "It just happened to be Seattle, who's in our division."

Frank Gore ran for 131 yards and the 49ers (5-2) hung tough on defense late in a game featuring two teams allowing fewer than 16 points per game.

Alex Smith went 14 of 23 for 140 yards in a second straight subpar performance.

Walker's score was San Francisco's first touchdown in seven quarters after an embarrassing 26-3 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday in a lopsided rematch of the NFC championship game.

NFC rushing leader Marshawn Lynch finished with 103 yards for Seattle (4-3).

It's now Harbaugh 3, Pete Carroll 0 since these coaching rivals started facing off in the NFL last year after all those memorable moments in the college game.

"That was the most physical 30 minutes of football in the second half that I have ever seen our football team play," Harbaugh said. "It's a sweet win. It was a real football fight, and our guys won it."

The 49ers improved to 5-0 after regular-season defeats since Harbaugh took over before last season.

Pulling off this one could give the 49ers some momentum, too. It was the first of two straight prime-time games for San Francisco, which doesn't play again until Oct. 29 at Arizona.

The defensive fight left the animated coaches shaking their heads and hollering on opposite sidelines all game, offering plenty of entertainment for the sellout crowd of 69,732 at balmy Candlestick Park.

"We found ourselves in a real slugfest here today," Carroll said. "I'm not surprised it could have gone that way with two good defenses and two teams committed to running the ball."

These teams met in Weeks 1 and 16 last season, with the 49ers beating Seattle 33-17 at home for Harbaugh's first victory as an NFL coach.

This one was close until the end.

"We've got to figure something out. We've got to figure out a way to get it done," Seahawks receiver Golden Tate said. "The season's not over. We still have a long way to go, so we can't let this set us back. I think we still have the chance to be a real special team."

After Walker's touchdown, Dashon Goldson intercepted a deep pass by Russell Wilson to thwart Seattle's next drive after NaVorro Bowman clobbered the rookie quarterback as he was trying to throw.

Smith gave the ball back with an interception of his own early in the fourth quarter. His fifth interception of the season matched his total from all of 2011.

Harbaugh went to backup Colin Kaepernick for one keeper play that lost a yard, then Smith returned for third-and-goal on the 7. He scrambled to his left looking for an open receiver and Brandon Browner jumped in front of a pass intended for Randy Moss.

That gave Seattle the ball back with 11:58 remaining. Yet again, the Seahawks couldn't capitalize on a night of missed opportunities and dropped balls.

Gore had his third 100-yard game of the season, not to be outdone by Lynch on the other side.

"I just got in that rhythm, and once I get in that rhythm, I feel I can't be stopped," Gore said.

Lynch carried 19 times and bounced back from a 41-yard outing in Sunday's comeback 24-23 home win against the Patriots. The 49ers and their top-ranked defense hadn't allowed a 100-yard rusher in 22 consecutive home games before New York's Ahmad Bradshaw ran for 116 yards and a touchdown Sunday ? and now the Niners made it twice in five days.

Not that they should have been too surprised. This is Lynch, after all.

The last time they faced off, on Dec. 24, Lynch ran for 107 yards as San Francisco's defense had its streak of not allowing a 100-yard rusher end at 36 games. And his 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter also was the first TD rushing allowed by San Francisco all season.

Wilson, who leading up to the game said that he couldn't wait for his introduction to this heated rivalry, went 9 of 23 for 122 yards, an interception and two sacks after rallying his team late to stun New England.

"The way we lost was frustrating. We could have done some things better," Wilson said. "I could have done some things better."

San Francisco was in control of the division at this stage last season ? sitting at 5-1 ? but needed a big second half Thursday after a quick week of preparation.

Steven Hauschka kicked a 52-yard field goal as Seattle scored first for the seventh time in as many games this year. He added a 35-yarder early in the second quarter, but missed wide left on a 51-yard try later in the quarter.

David Akers, who had eight of his NFL-record 44 field goals in the two games against the Seahawks last season, booted a 38-yarder late in the first quarter to make it 3-3.

NOTES: 49ers LT Joe Staley returned after sustaining a concussion Sunday. ... Seattle lost LB Malcolm Smith to a concussion on the opening kickoff, then WR Doug Baldwin later injured his ankle and did not return.

(AP) ? The trial of a Minneapolis man convicted in a conspiracy to send young men from Minnesota to the terrorist group al-Shabab in Somalia has provided the most detailed look yet into what has been called one of the largest investigations into the recruitment of U.S. fighters to a foreign terrorist organization.

Mahamud Said Omar, 46, was convicted Thursday on five terrorism-related counts, including one that could land him in prison for life. Authorities say he provided money for al-Shabab weapons and helped some young recruits get plane tickets for Somalia ? pushing them toward the terror group after they were indoctrinated in Minneapolis.

Omar nodded quietly as an interpreter gave him the news. As he was being led from the courtroom, he held his hands up over his head and smiled at his brothers and other supporters. One of his defense attorneys, Jon Hopeman, said afterward that Omar will appeal.

After the verdict, B. Todd Jones, the U.S. Attorney for Minnesota, said the government values religious and political freedoms, but there are some lines that can't be crossed.

"One of those lines is, you cannot provide material support to a designated terrorist organization such as al-Shabab," Jones said. "That message should be crystal clear. If you choose to do that, there are some serious ramifications of that decision."

Omar, a mosque janitor, was the first man to stand trial in the government's investigation into the recruitment of more than 20 men who authorities say have left Minnesota since 2007 to join al-Shabab, a U.S.-designated terrorist group linked to al-Qaida.

From secret meetings to plans to travel in small groups to avoid detection, trial testimony provided insight into how the young men were recruited and what happened when they got to Somalia and joined al-Shabab, which is blamed for much of the violence in the East African country.

Jones said that after years of exhaustive work, authorities were relieved to put the information before the public as the "eyes of the world" were focused on the trial. But, he said, the investigation is not over, and the government is taking reports that more men have departed for Somalia in recent months "very seriously."

"We always have to remain vigilant," Jones said. "Some folks are still fugitives and some folks lost their lives in the Horn of Africa, and there are still related ongoing investigations. This isn't the end of this kind of activity."

Omar was among 18 men charged in the investigation and the first to go to trial. Seven other defendants have pleaded guilty. Of the travelers, six are confirmed dead by the FBI and family members, while others are presumed to be dead or in Somalia.

"Our case continues in earnest, and every single day that we come to work, we continue to look at individuals potentially responsible for volunteering to travel, to train, to fight overseas on behalf of al-Shabab, or to become operatives," said E.K. Wilson, the FBI supervisory special agent overseeing the investigation.

And while authorities don't have any specific intelligence that al-Shabab will send recruits back to the U.S. to launch an attack here, he said authorities are constantly on the lookout for that possibility, because of the group's allegiance to al-Qaida.

Wilson said when looking at the sheer number of people recruited from one area, this case, dubbed Operation Rhino, represents one of the largest attempts to recruit U.S. fighters for a foreign terrorist organization. Minnesota has the largest Somali population in the United States.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John Docherty said funneling young men to the Horn of Africa, where some lost their lives and some took the lives of others, cannot be tolerated.

"We'll be very pleased if today's verdict plays any part in bringing that kind of behavior to a stop, because it is the kind of thing that just cannot go on in this community," he said Thursday.

workingmoms 200x300 11 Myths About Mothers Who Work Outside of the HomeIt took me a long time and a shiny new job, but I have to say that I L-O-V-E being a working mom these days.

I love the challenge in the office but I love that my new job is fewer hours, meaning more time with Harrison.? I love how much my kid loves his school but I also love my paycheck.

Last week, my post on why daycare rocks a box of unicorn sprinkles was syndicated on Yahoo! Shine and of course the comments came flooding in.? Mostly about how I shouldn?t have children if I can?t be with them and how selfish women like me are what is wrong with the world.? Not like it?s 2012 with women?s liberation and education and a crashing economy that requires many of us to go back to work after having babies.? That?s just the crazy in me talking, I suppose.

In response, I thought I would try and debunk some of the ?myths? surrounding women that work outside of the home:

Obesity predisposes one to breast cancer, says expert

Abuja ? People with obesity have higher risk of breast cancer, a physician with Garki Hospital in Abuja, Dr Adamu Onu, has said

Onu, said this in an interview? on Thursday in Abuja, disclosed that studies had shown that obesity was partly responsible for the increase in breast cancer among women.

He, however, noted that obesity does not directly lead to breast cancer but to other ailment, such as high blood pressure, bad cholesterol and stroke, among others.

According to him, obesity means having too much body fat; it is not the same as being overweight, which means weighing too much.

A person may be overweight from extra muscle, bone, or water, as well as from having too much fat.

??In this part of the world, we already seen more and more people been obese; in fact, there is a study that says one out of every three Nigerian women is obese.?

?There is what we call body mass index, that is a way we measure it; if we measure your body mass index and it?s above 30 that is the indication that the person is obese.?

He said that in order not to be obese, the normal body mass index should be less than 25, adding that one should maintain a normal body weight.

Onu said that index could be calculated by measuring of one?s height in meters and the weight in kilogram then divided the weight by the height.

He said that to burn the fat one needed regular and moderate intensity exercises at least 5 times in a week, adding that such exercise should includes skipping, swimming, jumping, jogging, among others for 20 to 30 minutes every day.

He advised that one should reduce the intake of carbohydrate, animal fat, adding that more intake of poly unsaturated oil would be much healthy.

?You can substitute fish for meat, chicken without the skin, take lots of vegetables and fresh fruits and have an active lifestyle.??? (NAN)

S&P 500 gets housing lift, but IBM reins in the Dow

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The S&P 500 rose for the third consecutive day on Wednesday after housing starts hit a four-year high, but the Dow was weighed down by IBM after it posted weak revenue.

Homebuilders' shares led gains after the Commerce Department said groundbreaking on new homes jumped 15 percent in September, the quickest pace since July 2008. The surge in housing starts was viewed as evidence that the housing sector's fledgling recovery is bolstering the recovery of the broader economy.

The PHLX Housing Index <.hgx> rose 2.9 percent.

International Business Machines Corp was a notable disappointment after the company said revenue fell short of expectations. The stock dropped 4.9 percent, exerting an 81-point drag on the Dow industrials. IBM has an outsized influence on the Dow, which is a price-weighted index. IBM's stock closed at $200.63.

Intel Corp , the world's largest chipmaker, lost 2.5 percent to end at $21.79 a day after giving a weak revenue outlook. The S&P technology sector index <.gspt> slid 0.8 percent and ranked as the only loser among the S&P 500's 10 industry sectors on Wednesday.

Although it's still early in the earnings season, the results have been a bit better than anticipated. Fourteen percent of S&P 500 companies have already reported earnings, and of those companies, 65 percent have beaten analysts' expectations, ahead of the long-term average of 62 percent.

"The results are just not that bad at all. And whenever people begin to get too far in one direction - meaning earnings are going to be terrible - generally reality is better than that, and we are seeing that now," said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer of Solaris Group in Bedford Hills, New York.

According to Thomson Reuters data through Wednesday afternoon, quarterly earnings for S&P 500 components are now expected to fall 1.7 percent from a year ago, a modest improvement in expectations from a forecast for a drop of 2.3 percent earlier in the week.

Bank of America shares fell 0.2 percent to $9.44 after the second-largest U.S. bank reported that it earned just $340 million during the quarter, down 95 percent from the year-ago period. The bank also said it had provided $4.75 billion in first lien principal reductions and expected to meet total obligations within the first year of the National Mortgage Settlement.

"For the financials, the bar was set very low. They topped the bar, but we didn't get a nice tailwind from post-announcement conference calls," said Fred Dickson, chief market strategist at D.A. Davidson & Co., in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> rose 5.22 points, or 0.04 percent, to 13,557 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> gained 5.99 points, or 0.41 percent, to finish at 1,460.91. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> advanced 2.95 points, or 0.10 percent, to close at 3,104.12.

Over the past three days, the S&P 500 has gained 2.3 percent - its best three-day advance in more than a month. The benchmark index is now just 0.33 percent off its 2012 closing high.

After the bell, shares of Ebay slipped 0.5 percent to $47.95 following the release of its results. The stock ended the regular session at $48.20, off just 0.08 percent.

Shares of American Express fell 0.6 percent to $59 after the bell after the company said third-quarter profit rose only marginally as cardmembers reined in their spending. American Express, a Dow component, closed on Wednesday at $59.37, up 1.3 percent in regular trading.

Among Wednesday's biggest losers during the regular session was Apollo Group Inc , which plunged 22.2 percent to close at an 11-year low of $21.40. Shares of Apollo, the owner of the University of Phoenix, the largest U.S. for-profit college, fell after the company forecast a weak 2013 and announced new student sign-ups fell 14 percent for the fourth quarter ended August 31.

Apollo said it would save $300 million by fiscal year 2014 by cutting jobs and shutting half of its University of Phoenix learning sites.

ASML , the world's leading chip gear maker, agreed to buy Cymer - its key supplier of a light-based technology crucial to making a new generation of much smaller and smarter chips - for $2.5 billion. Cymer's stock soared 49.4 percent to $71.45. In contrast, the U.S.-listed shares of ASML dropped 6.5 percent to $50.08.

Volume was roughly 6.3 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the NYSE MKT, compared with the year-to-date average daily closing volume of 6.51 billion.

Advancers outnumbered decliners on the NYSE by a ratio of more than 2 to 1. On the Nasdaq, five stocks rose for every three that fell.

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (10/17/2012) An international team of researchers, including a University of Minnesota scientist, has developed an integrated physical, genetic and functional sequence assembly of the barley genome, one of the world's most important and genetically complex cereal crops. Results are published in today's issue of Nature.

The advance will give researchers the tools to produce higher yields, improve pest and disease resistance, and enhance the nutritional value of barley.

Importantly, it also will "accelerate breeding improvements to help barley adapt to climate change," says Gary Muehlbauer, head of the Department of Plant Biology, a joint department of the university's College of Biological Sciences and the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences. "That means making barley more resistant to drought and able to use water and nitrogen more efficiently."

Muehlbauer is vice chair of the International Barley Sequencing Consortium (IBSC), which carried out the sequencing. The IBSC (www.barleygenome.org) was founded in 2006 and includes scientists from Germany, Japan, Finland, Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States and China. The USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture and the National Science Foundation provided funding for the US part of the effort.

The Nature publication provides a detailed overview of the functional portions of the barley genome, the order and structure of most of its 32,000 genes, and a detailed analysis of where and when genes are switched on in different tissues and at different stages of development. It also describes the location of dynamic regions of the genome that carry genes conferring resistance to devastating diseases. This will greatly improve the understanding of the crop's immune system.

In the 1990s, Minnesota had a million acres of barley, but that has dwindled to about 120,000 because an epidemic of Fusarium head blight, which has decimated the crop in this state. Most barley is now grown in North Dakota, Montana and Idaho.

"This resource will help make it possible to breed barley that is resistant to various pathogens, that exhibits improved grain quality, and increased drought tolerance and nitrogen use efficiency," says Muehlbauer, who holds an endowed chair in molecular genetics applied to crop improvement in the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics.

Sequencing of the genome will accelerate research in barley and its close relative wheat. It will also allow breeders and scientists to effectively address the challenge of feeding the world's growing population as climate change increasingly challenges growers with extreme weather events, according to the USDA.
